Psychoanalytic therapy for the parts of life you keep to yourself.
April Rohr, LCSW · Psychoanalytic psychotherapist · Brooklyn Heights and telehealth across New York State
Currently offering first sessions in November.
I work with people who are accomplished by most measures and privately unconvinced by their own lives — curious, a little restless, aware that something doesn't quite add up. Many have tried therapy before and found it surface-level. Some have never tried and have their reasons.
My approach is psychoanalytic, which means we spend less time on the problem in front of you and more on the pattern underneath it. If something has been quietly off for a long time, it's usually worth understanding why.
Who I work with
Men who've already done the hard part
Accomplished, driven men whose careers went right and whose earlier years didn't. Many are sober, some for a long time. The drinking, the using, or the compulsion is handled; the restlessness, the distance in relationships, and the habit of being hardest on themselves are not. Recovery got the behavior under control. This work is for what it was managing.
Women who keep second-guessing themselves
Perceptive, capable women who know they're underselling themselves — at work, in relationships, in what they let themselves want. This isn't coaching or a productivity system. It's work on what the self-doubt has been protecting, and what it has cost.
How I work
Sessions are conversations, not long silences. I listen closely, ask questions, and tell you what I notice. Over time we look at the unconscious dynamics that shape mood, relationships, and self-esteem — the ones that keep producing the same result no matter how hard you try.
I offer weekly psychodynamic psychotherapy and, for people who want to go further, psychoanalysis at three or more sessions a week.
What patients say
“I have been seeing April since 2018 — she has changed everything.”
“…she's phenomenal at asking questions and getting you to think about things at a deeper level.”
“Unlike other therapists I have tried in the past, April does not jump to conclusions or force conversations certain ways, which makes it very comfortable to talk about anything currently on my mind.”
